HEROLD CONTEMPORARY ART CONSERVATION is a Berlin-based practice dedicated to the care and preservation of modern and contemporary art.

Working across paintings, sculptures, objects, and installations, the studio approaches conservation as a dialogue between material, process, and artistic intention. Particular attention is given to complex materialities, industrially fabricated components, and time-based change as an inherent aspect of contemporary works.

working with galleries, museums, biennials, and private collections internationally, and fellow conservators, the practice supports artworks within exhibition contexts as well as long-term collection care — balancing conceptual integrity with material stability.

ETHICS

“In my work, it’s a yearning to be known – not for someone else to know me, but to know myself.” — Nicole Eisenman

Contemporary artworks often involve experimental materials, innovative techniques, and complex fabrication processes. Conservation therefore begins with careful research into the artist’s intent, materials, and methods of production.

My practice is guided by respect for the history, materiality, and future preservation of each object. Treatments prioritize minimal intervention, material integrity, and transparency, supported by careful documentation and adherence to established professional and ethical standards.

“In my art as in life, my guiding maxim is AMO ERGO SUM – I love, therefore I am.” — Renate Bertlmann
